When I wrote Thank God I’m Natural: The Ultimate Guide to Caring for Natural Hair over seven years ago, I wanted to share my life long journey as a black woman who struggled to accept her hair in all its natural beauty. As many of you know, after graduating from Harvard Law School, I wore a wig when I started my first job in Corporate America to camouflage my kinky tresses to conform to the idea that straight hair is more professional and accepted in the workplace. I never wanted another woman to feel that she had to compromise who she was in order to look beautiful and professional, so I created hair care products to address this issue.
When I launched the product line tgin, Thank God It’s Natural, in 2013, I intentionally developed these products for women with hair that was like mine – soft, kinky, curly and dry. Many years later, we realize that our products are loved by women of all races with all hair textures, but everyone, including my team, is clear on who our very first customer was, what she cares about, and how we got to where we are today.
My now deceased mother always said “To Whom Much is Given, Much is Expected.” You, our customers, have given me so much, and I believe it is only fair to expect much in return.
As such, we as a company continue to not only deliver best in class hair care products, but focus on issues that are important to the black and brown community. Although we don’t talk about it much, we at tgin have been touched by gang violence, gun violence, drug addiction, homelessness, and teenage pregnancy, and my own personal battle with breast cancer, but we have persevered through it all, because of the unwavering support of women like you!
Moreover, the success of tgin has allowed me to become a business leader in the Chicago community and a vocal advocate for communities of color when it comes to issues with respect to work force development, Obamacare, education, crime and minority entrepreneurship. It is my promise to you that I am here for you and I am not ashamed to say publically or privately, that this company is owned by a strong black woman and that YOU are my customer.
Thank you for your support all of these years.
To celebrate you and show our appreciation, all tgin hair care products are just $9.99 all week long with the Code: WEHEARU until Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 11:59 PST.
Stay natural,
